Acids and bases are among the most reactive substances. Their storage requires extra attention. Improper handling may lead to serious incidents.
Frequently underestimated issues:
- Incompatible containers: Acids may react with metal caps or low-quality plastics.
- Improper co-storage: Acids and bases must be strictly separated (e.g. hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide react strongly upon contact).
- Unsuitable environment: High humidity or direct sunlight can cause decomposition or pressure build-up.
- Lack of ventilation: Acid vapours may be corrosive to nearby equipment.
- Mislabelling: Unmarked or incorrectly labelled containers pose a major risk – never store chemicals in food containers.
It is essential to define clear storage zones, use secondary containment trays, regularly check stock conditions, and ensure access to personal protective equipment. Emergency plans and regular staff training are strongly recommended.
